Digital Food PhotographyPhotographing food with your digital camera is one of the most rewarding as well as challenging forms of photography. Though the time constraint can make it difficult, the photographer should know that he needs to maintain and complete the photo shoot in the required time. It's extremely important that anyone taking up food photography for professional reasons has to be skilled and trained enough to reach the desired results. This is mainly because the purpose and the marketability of the whole shoot shows in the print. As a quality digital food photographer, you'll have to know your camera inside out (literally). Making yourself comfortable and familiarized with all the important features is a must. The basic functions like exposure compensation, image resolution, focus, white balance etc. are all important to snap the best angles and take the best shots, you simply shouldn't ignore these. Get closely familiar with the other accessories and equipment which play a major part in the final outcome. For example, when you know how to properly use a tripod, it will not only help you avoid the blurred picture but also help you remain stable and firm throughout the shoot. There shouldn't be any unnecessary distance. If there is any gap, fill it. It would be advisable, that you try to get as close as possible to your subject to get the best results. If you are looking for a crystal clear picture giving out the right message, fill the entire frame with your subject. The right distance will easily give the complete view of the food's look and texture. As a good food photographer, it's your job to calculate the depth of field (DOF) very carefully. When you use DOF in your food photography, it creates real magic and adds value to your shoot. Adjusting the focus and depth of field will actually determine how good your end result turns out to be and how much life you are blowing into your work. In food photography, usually it's not hard to find a unique ingredient in your subject, but failing to do so will make things look vague. Dont lose this opportunity to grab people by their eye balls by focusing on something that's different in your subject. You can and should always use this particular feature as a standout point of your subject. Like we need air to breathe and live, photographs need the right lighting to live forever. Lighting can make or break the beauty of a photograph. When you are shooting food, it's always good to highlight the delicious nature of the subject by keeping the lights soft and settings bright. The good thing about digital photography is, you can always turn on the white balance feature in the camera to get rid of any dark settings instantly. But still, lighting will always remain an integral part of your shoot. Dress to kill, or eat rather. Your food should be set up the right way, for the right effect. So pay utmost attention while setting up your shoot. The background should be clear, absolutely no distractions should be there, and the main focus should be your subject. Sometimes it looks very obvious that something's missing; fill in the gap with anything else that's complimentary. Dont forget to garnish and do anything else that might make the food appealing and appetizing. |
